Abstract

Sexual violence in Aceh has increased significantly during 2010-2011, rape case resulted in the appalling conditions for the victims. The purpose of this study was to determine the resilience of women victims of rape. Resilience is needed to help the rape victims to overcome a bad experience that can last through their life. This study used a qualitative method and case study approach. Purposeful sampling technique, specifically snowball sampling, was used by selecting subject according to certain party recommendation who knew subject source and location. Four subjects who were victims of rape and lived in Aceh subjects in this research. Data were collected with interviews and observation techniques and analyzed by using the theme-by-subject analysis, which was implemented by written case study report for each subject based on interview, then the report was interpreted and conclusions were made. Interview process followed interview guide composed according to resilience aspects by Bonanno (2004). Interview results show that all four subjects had different resiliency skills. Subject A resilience capability was growing rapidly (thriving), subject B was able to survive (survival), subjects C and D was still in the recovery phase (recovery). Resilience of each subject were influenced by the tough personality, self-improvement, and adjusting to repressive and positive emotions. The result also confirm other factors that influence resilience of each subject i.e. support, hope, gratitude, optimism, resignation, reaching out, self-efficacy, impact and post-rape difficulty.
